Dedication of the Three Forms
Shivabalayogi gives life to the
Trimurty Gods
in the Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara Temple, Bangalore, August 7, 1987
Dedication
means setting
aside for a sacred purpose. On August 7th, 1987, Shri Shri Shri
Shivabalayogi Maharaj dedicated the Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara Temple in
Bangalore. The Trimurty (literally, "Three Forms") consists of the three fundamental
manifestations of God: Brahma and Saraswati, the Creator; Vishnu and
Lakshmi, the Sustainer, and Maheshwara (Shiva) and Parvati, the Destroyer
of Illusion.
One explanation that Shri Swamiji gave for dedicating a temple to the Trimurty was to honor his mother, Parvatamma. She was
concerned for her son when at age fourteen, he sat for in meditation for
twenty-three hours a day. The Trimurty appeared in several visions to
reassure her of God’s protection, and Parvatamma wanted to honor and thank
the Trimurty in return. By dedicating the Trimurty temple, Shri Swamiji
was fulfilling his mother’s desire.
The temple at the Shivabalayogi ashram in Bangalore is the only one in the world where all three aspects of God are worshipped. Traditionally, it is forbidden to worship the God Brahma. For thousands of years, Shri Swamiji explained, Brahma has been cursed. Among the reasons Shivabalayogi was born and completed tapas was to remove that curse. "Swamiji Talks about the Temple" is a short, additional program on this DVD that contains a recorded conversation about Brahma.
At midnight of August 6th, Shivabalayogi placed the six gods within the three sanctuaries in the temple, and statues of Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles, Subramanyan, the son of Shiva and Parvati, and Nandi, the divine vehicle of Lord Shiva. The following day, he gave these nine forms full life. Swamiji explained that when yogis give life (pranaprathistha) to idols, they attach an astral body or soul to the form, much like an astral body gives life to the physical body of a person.
On this same occasion, Shri Swamiji inaugurated the wedding hall named in honor of his mother that stands behind the temple. An additional program on this DVD contains video taken in Swamiji’s darshan room on the morning of August 7th, the homa in front of the temple, and the wedding hall itself on that day.
"If you see [the gods in the temple] you will understand. Without seeing it, how can you understand?"
