Shivabalayogi received his name from Shiva after completing
tapas. It refers to the union of Shiva (the masculine aspect), His spouse Bala
(the feminine aspect), and Yogi (Swamiji). “Bala” also means boy, and Swamiji
was called Bala Yogi during tapas because He was so young. Actually, Shiva named
him ShivaBalaYogishwara (Lord of Yogis Devoted to Shiva and Parvati), but
Swamiji shortened the name to avoid confusion with “Ishwara,” God. “Namo” and “namah”
mean paying homage, bowing before, or worshipping. So the Bala Yogi Arathi is a
song in which we express our devotion towards Swamiji, the God realized Yogi. The following is a translation.
Beautiful son of Parvatamma (the name of Swamiji’s mother), Sathyaraju
(Swamiji’s name as a boy), we bow before Swami. / Hail the Lord of the Universe
(Jagadishwara), hail Master of Powers (siddhi), constantly in dhyana meditation,
we bow before Swami. / Residing in the soul, constantly there residing,
Worshipper Lord, we bow before Swami. / Remover of pain, guardian of the
universe who bestows sympathy, we bow before Swami. / Hail Shiva, Giver of Joy
(Shankara), hail You who gives Fearlessness (Abhyankara, Shiva), hail Bearer of
the Ganges River (Gangadhara, Shiva), we bow before Swami. / Hail master of
knowledge (jnana), hail lord of strength, great creator of all, we bow before
Swami.
